Around 80,000 people have taken refugee in Turkey since started rebellion and civil war in Syria and these people were placed camps in various cities.  These people had to escape from civil war in order to save their lives, and therefore they left their families, relatives, homes and works.  There are many people among them who are injured by weapons and bombs.

They try to live in tents with aids which are providing by relief organizations. Some little children are employing in different fields as cheap labor. This situation causes to hinder their education. Their problems will increase because of coming winter. Asylum is a big issue and also warming and different diseases can be problem.

In Turkey, some media organs conduct campaigns against these people who try to live in difficult conditions (because the reason is that there are people among refugees who fight against the regime in Syria). These refugees were declared as “bearded terrorists” by uncorroborated assertions. According to media, refugees create troubles, molest children and women and they do not pay money to the craft. All of these assertions have been figured in the press. Finally, another campaign advocates that “terrorist camps should be closed, terrorists should be sent to their countries”.

On the other hand, asylum has been accepted as  one of the basic human rights in the whole world. Universal Declaration of Human Rights define that “Everyone has the right to seek and enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution” (Article 14/1).

The 1951 Convention of United Nations is the key document to define who is refugee. According to the Convention, a refugee is someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.  Common asylum emerges in civil wars and conflicts, dense oppressions, major disasters. Asylum is a legal status and refugees can be put under protection by the state of asylum.

The situation of Syrian refugees is not different in Turkey. We see these relentless campaigns as unlawful and wrong against refugees, because they exercise their rights which are emerged in international conventions and universal criteria of human rights.

We call the public opinion in order to offer a hand of friendship and participants should desist from campaigns which indicate refugees as target.
