Say Stop to Racism and Nationalism (DurDe*) was founded in February 2007 to combat racism and nationalism and has grown rapidly since then. DurDe is a grassroots organization and has local groups in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bodrum, etc.
DurDe has carried out three major campaigns and organized various events since its foundation.
The first campaign was the “Remove § 301**, Trial Racists” campaign, which was completed in June, 2008. 20 000 signatures were collected and over 30 public meetings were organized throughout the campaign. There are currently over 16,500 participants in the Facebook pages of the campaign. The Turkish National Assembly was visited in the framework of this campaign and the campaign received extensive media coverage.
The second campaign was aimed at supporting the public prosecutor, Zekeriya Öz, who investigated the Ergenekon indictment. DurDe collected several thousand signatures and held a public press conference in Istanbul.
Another campaign carried out was “Apologising to our Armenian Brothers and Sisters”. The campaign has been initiated with about 300 intellectuals as “first signers” and it’s been carried out by the support of DurDe! Over 31 thousand signatures have been collected.
The commemoration held on 24 April 2010 in Istanbul organized by DurDe was the first of its kind ever as a remembrance of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. This event received very wide media coverage and provoked a wide range of polemics even among the government’s ranks.
DurDe is currently engaged in a “hate crimes campaign” which comprises several major activities (see details below).
We have also organized events as part of the Action Week Against Racism on 21March in the past five years.
DurDe is a member of the folowing international organizations:
* “DurDe” means “Say Stop!”
** Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code has been widely used against opponents.
