Current activities

 
  • Platform Against Hate Crimes: DurDe, together with the Association for Social Change has been running a campaign against hate crimes. In the context of this campaign, a platform to combat hate crimes was initiated. Over 60 institutions and 350 people have participated in meetings aiming to create a national platform. The Platform’s foundation was announced at a press conference which was held in Istanbul on 26 January 2012.
  • Campaign Against Hate Crimes: This campaign is drafting a special legislation against hate crimes which will be submitted to the Turkish National Assembly. Other activities – petitions, information stalls, meetings, seminars, etc. – are carried out with activists and volunteers.
  • “Racist of the Month”: DurDe monitors the Turkish media and each month reports statements by politicians, articles or incidents that reflect racism, ethnic discrimination, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia or hate speech. The candidates are selected and participants of DurDe vote online to identify the “Racist of the Month”. This receives widespread interest in the Turkish media.
  • International Conference Against Hate Crimes: DurDe and the Association for Social Change will organize an international conference in Istanbul in 2013 against racism, hate crimes and hate speech.
  • International Festival Against Racism and Hate Crimes: DurDe and the Association for Social Change will organize an international festival in Istanbul in 2013 against racism and hate crimes.
  • Other Activities: DurDe organizes or participates in the following activities, commemorations and meetings every year:
    • 9 November – “Kristall Nacht”,
    • 19 January – the murder of Hrant Dink*,
    • 21 March - International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination,
    • 24 April - Commemoration Day for the Armenian Genocide.
    • Each month DurDe organizes at least one seminar open to the public on issues like racism, nationalism and hate crimes.

 

* Hrant Dink, a Turkish Armenian journalist and intellectual who wrote on Armenian issues and defended peace, was shot dead on 19 January 2021 by extreme nationalists. DurDe was founded as a reaction to the murder of Dink.
